The Past: Before Nicholas was Born

The reason Russia didn?ave a democratic form of government was due to Alexander III?ather, Alexander II, who was assassinated in 1881.3 His father wanted to change the government so that the people would have the right to express their political ideas. After the assassination, Alexander III built up distrust for all popular movements including all liberal and revolutionary movements. He suppressed liberal ideas throughout his reign and his example influenced his son Nicholas. 4 Due to the conditions passed to him, every time something was to be asked of him, for example changes, he refused.
